I always carry knitting with me even right after 9/11. I once has a bit of a fight with an agent in Toronto and at Heathrow they say no knitting but I kept it in my bag and had no problem! Knit all the way back to Chicago. I think you are over thinking it. It is not a big deal. I have had both wood and metal needles with me. Never don't bring knitting! ahhhh
